The defending US Open champion, Coco Gauff, easily defeated Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 6-3, 6-0 to advance to the Australian Open’s second round.
Gauff’s performance at the Australian Open proved how much her training with Andy Roddick has improved her game. According to Gauff, she is working on her serve with former world champion Andy Roddick. Gauff expressed her thoughts and said: “I felt good. I was a little bit nervous coming in today. Probably you could tell. I was able to calm down and then play—not my best, but good tennis from that point.”
With a serve speed of an incredible 198 km/h, Gauff set a match record. Her accuracy was especially impressive, even though she has hit harder in the past. Gauff won all of her points on her first serve in the second set against Schmiedlova.
Gauff claimed that Roddick had recently given her some serving guidance, and she conceded just one point on her serve in the second set.
She added: “It was cool. He’s a chill guy. I met him before, but never to that level. I went to Charlotte (North Carolina) for two days. It was an excellent two days. I think that my service has improved. He’s probably one of the best servers in history.”
