At Kia Arena, Anisimova, a former player ranked in the Top 25, caused an upset by defeating Samsonova, who was seeded 13th, with a score of 6-3, 6-4 in a match that lasted 1 hour and 24 minutes. The player who reached the semifinals of the 2019 Roland Garros tournament now has a 2-0 record against Samsonova in their previous matches.
Anisimova had a break from the tour for seven months last year before coming back to play two weeks ago in Auckland, where she made it to the second round. Now, in only the second competition after her return, Anisimova has achieved her 17th victory against a Top 20 opponent in her career.
The American had to overcome a disadvantage in both sets, including being behind 4-1 in the second set. Anisimova systematically brought herself back into contention, winning five games in a row to secure the victory.
Anisimova, who made it to the Round of 16 at the Australian Open in 2019 and 2022, had one additional winner and 13 less unforced errors than Samsonova in the powerful match.
