Medvedev, a former World No. 1, highlighted the intense competition between him and Zverev, asserting that being best friends was an impractical expectation in such a fiercely competitive environment. He acknowledged their remarkable achievements but emphasized the inherent rivalry that made friendship challenging.
“I don’t think I played against anyone more than Sascha but we can’t be like best friends. It’s impossible. Too much competition. He has Olympic Games. I have a Grand Slam. I do think a Grand Slam is a bigger title even if Olympic games are amazing,” Medvedev expressed.
The 27-year-old Russian further illuminated the nature of their rivalry, stating that on the court, the primary focus is to win and essentially “destroy each other.” Their rivalry spans a decade, marked by a relentless pursuit of victory and a commitment to outperform one another.
“We have been rivals for ten years. On the court, we want to still win and destroy each other. I’m very competitive, always want to win, always,” added Medvedev.
As the tennis world anticipates the 2024 Australian Open, both Medvedev and Zverev find themselves seeded third and sixth, respectively. The stage is set for another chapter in their enduring rivalry, where the quest for triumph takes precedence over the possibility of friendship.
