Novak Djokovic talks about his legacy of improving the sport and supporting fellow players

With three grand slam victories and a No. 1 ranking at the end of 2023, Novak Djokovic seems to have no plans to put down his racquets anytime soon.

Novak Djokovic appears to have no intention of hanging up his racquets anytime soon, having won three of the four grand slams in 2023 and finishing the year ranked No. 1 once more.

While the 36-year-old Serb is still setting records, he acknowledges that he is thinking more about what comes next and how he wants to be remembered when he does decide to hang up the tennis racquet.

During a conversation with Jim Courier, Djokovic expressed his desire for his legacy to centre on two aspects. Djokovic said: “I would like to be remembered as someone who used his platform and his status and influence as a top player to help improve the sport and the livelihood of fellow tennis players. That is something that drives me; that’s one of my great wishes. Of course, I would like to be remembered as someone who devoted all his life to the sport, played the sport with his heart and his guts, left it all out there, and hopefully inspired a lot of younger people to grab a racquet. Yeah, and a few other things.”

With three Grand Slam victories and making it to the final of each, Djokovic ends 2023 as the world’s top player. He lost a thrilling five-set match at Wimbledon against Carlos Alcaraz.

He added: “I do normally always have clarity about where I want to go and what the goals are. I know the goals are Grand Slams and Olympics, but other than that, I have no idea where I want to play. I’m still hungry, I still want to compete, and I can still run for hours, thankfully, but it’s more of an emotional aspect; what’s the priority? Tennis has been the priority for 20+, 30 years, and I don’t want to miss out on too many moments with my children.”
