German tennis star Alexander Zverev secured a triumphant start to 2024 as he led Team Germany to victory in the United Cup, a global men’s and women’s tennis team’s event. The thrilling final against Poland showcased Zverev’s resilience and determination on the court.
Zverev’s girlfriend, Sophia Thomalla, a well-known figure in Germany for her roles in TV shows and films, expressed her admiration and support for Zverev’s achievement. The couple, believed to have started dating in 2020, celebrated the success together.
The United Cup, held for the second time from December 29, 2023, to January 7, 2024, in Sydney and Perth, Australia, featured intense competition and offered ATP and WTA ranking points, along with a substantial prize pool of A$15 million.
Team Germany, led by Zverev and Angelique Kerber, navigated through the tournament, facing challenges from formidable opponents. Despite a loss to Team France in the group stage, Germany advanced to the quarterfinals due to superior sets and game margins.
In a gripping quarterfinal match against Team Greece, Zverev’s victory in the men’s singles and the mixed doubles alongside Laura Siegemund propelled Germany to the semifinals. There, they staged a remarkable comeback against the host nation, Australia, securing a 2-1 win and a spot in the final.

The final, held on January 7 at the Ken Rosewall Arena in Sydney, featured a showdown between Germany and Poland. Zverev, facing a tough challenge from Hubert Hurkacz, demonstrated his prowess by winning in a three-set thriller. The mixed doubles match proved decisive, with Zverev and Siegemund clinching the title for Germany.
Zverev took to Instagram to share his joy, posting pictures with the United Cup trophy and expressing pride in his team’s accomplishment. “We did it! United Cup Champions!!!🎾🎾🏆🏆🥇🥇 Very proud of this team! ❤️” he wrote.

At the moment ranked no.6, Zverev played his last match on the 7th of January when he overcame world no.9 Hubert Hurkacz 6-7(3) 7-6(6) 6-4 in the final in Australia to win his 22nd career title.

Zverev is scheduled to play next at the Australian Open (Australian Open). He will start from the main draw that will commence on the 14th of January.
