In a thrilling announcement by the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, tennis enthusiasts can anticipate an exciting showdown at the International Tennis Centre, Zayed Sports City, from February 3-11. The Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open is poised to host some of the world’s top female tennis players, with the latest addition being the sensational Emma Raducanu, who enters the competition as a wildcard.
The confirmed participants already boast an impressive lineup, featuring fan-favorite Ons Jabeur from Tunisia and Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia, currently ranked 11th in the world. The highly anticipated player field, expected to include numerous WTA top 20-ranked players, will be unveiled on January 9.
Raducanu, who captured global attention in 2021, emerged victorious at the US Open at the age of 18, entering the main draw as a qualifier. Defeating Canada’s Leylah Fernandez in the final, Raducanu made history as the first qualifier to clinch a Grand Slam title in the Open Era. Her remarkable achievement was further highlighted by securing the title without dropping a single set throughout the competition.
Expressing her enthusiasm, the 21-year-old Raducanu stated, “I’m looking forward to competing at the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open in February alongside a very strong field. The first edition of the event was a big success, and I’m sure this year’s tournament will be equally as exciting. I can’t wait to come back and perform in front of the Abu Dhabi tennis fans again.”
Nigel Gupta, Tournament Director at the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open, shared the excitement, saying, “We are thrilled to announce that Emma Raducanu will be competing at this year’s tournament. It’s great to see her back on court and competing at the highest level, and we are hugely excited at the prospect of watching her play in Abu Dhabi.”
Raducanu will be part of a 28-player field at the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open, comprising 18 direct acceptances, six qualifiers, and four wildcard entrants, including the Kent-born star.
Having recently returned to action after a period of injury, Raducanu showcased her skills at the ASB Classic in Auckland last week, reaching the final 16. Her focus now shifts to the Australian Open, where she will continue her comeback, with the tournament commencing on Sunday, January 14.
Following the conclusion of the first Grand Slam of 2024, Raducanu is set to captivate tennis fans in the UAE as she heads to the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open. The tournament promises a thrilling showcase of talent and competition, building on the success of its inaugural edition. As the main draw entry list is set to be revealed on Tuesday, anticipation is reaching new heights, promising an unforgettable event in the world of women’s tennis.
