American teenager Coco Gauff overcame Elina Svitolina to successfully defend her Auckland Classic title after falling behind early in the match.
The US Open champion won 6-7(4) 6-3 6-3 to secure her seventh victory in eight WTA singles finals to date. Gauff, who is 19 years old, has already won 29 of her last 33 singles matches.
Although Gauff has never advanced past the fourth round of the Australian Open, her performance leading up to the first major of the year indicates she is prepared to break that record in 2024.
Gauff expressed her feelings after the win and said: “This was my first time having to defend a title, so I’m really happy I was able to do that today. I’d like to congratulate Elina and your team on an incredible week. What you do, being a mom and coming back so fast and at such a high level, is inspiring.”
