Matteo Berrettini is scheduled to participate in his first event of the upcoming season, indicating that he may finally make an appearance.

For almost a year, Berrettini has been plagued by injuries, forcing him to withdraw from the Brisbane International qualifying this past weekend. After injuring his ankle in a US Open second-round match, he was forced to end his campaign after playing just 26 matches the previous year.

The rapidly rising Jannik Sinner has surpassed Berrettini as the top-ranked ATP player in Italy. At 92, the 27-year-old is currently just outside of the world’s Top 100. He didn’t even make the entry deadline for Brisbane’s main draw.

Berrettini was signed up to compete in the ASB Classic in Auckland, but he was only going to be an alternate for a main draw spot because his falling ranking would have only allowed him to qualify.

However, a news source claims that the Italian is scheduled to depart for Melbourne on Saturday, January 6. This excludes him from competing in warm-up events before the year’s first Grand Slam.
