Stefanos Tsitsipas is on a roll!
The Greek beats Alexander Zverev to win his 7th consecutive match and reach the semifinal in Madrid.
The match
Many were waiting for this match as it seems that Stefanos and Sascha will be one of the spiciest rivalries of the next decade. The German refused to acknowledge Stefanos’ efforts when he defeated him at the Rogers Cup last year and just before this match he hinted that the Greek was high in the rankings because he was playing a lot (see article).
The difference between Tsitsipas and Zverev in the first 2 sets was just 1 break per set. In fact, in the 1st set, Zverev was broken at love in the 11th game (5-6) while in the 2nd set it was Tsitsipas to have the same fate (broken at love) in the 8th game (3-5).
Therefore the scoreline was 7-5 3-6, and the affair went to the decider. The key point of the match was when Stefanos managed to hold his serve in the 3rd game (2-1) after saving 3 crucial break points. After being unable to break his opponent, it was Zverev to drop his serve soon after (3-1). That was the moment “of truth” since Tsitsipas conceded only 2 points in the next services games before breaking Zverev again at the very end.
The Greek won the match 7-5 3-6 6-2, and the encounter ended after 2 hours and 10 minutes.
Head to head Stefanos Tsitsipas vs. Rafael Nadal
