At the ASB Classic, Coco Gauff is unstoppable, and it seems unlikely that anyone will be able to stop the American superstar. The 19-year-old has been off to a strong start in 2024, which is starting to seem a lot like last year, even though there are some harder checks this week.
With a decisive 6-3, 6-0 victory against 16-year-old Czech qualifier Brenda Fruhvirtova on Thursday, Gauff advanced to the quarterfinals. Power, accuracy, placement, and her signature agility were all there in typical Gauff fashion.
She was playing against a younger opponent for the first time in the past two years, so it was also a new experience for her.
She expressed her thoughts about it and said: “Everybody’s hungry but when you are young, you just always want to beat the best, so I did feel that pressure coming into the match. It’s a weird thing for me now. I told myself today that as more time passes, you have to get used to it.”
She added: “Just on the mental side, I felt a little bit more mature. Certain points I probably won playing the smarter shot. That comes with life, the same as when I was 16. I had to learn a lot of things.”
