Coco Gauff’s coach compares her US Open win to Andre Agassi’s special French Open 1999

Coco Gauff's coach Brad Gilbert compared her amazing triumph at the 2023 US Open to that of his former prodigy Andre Agassi in the 1999 French Open.

Brad Gilbert, the coach of Coco Gauff, has compared her incredible victory at the 2023 US Open to that of his previous protege Andre Agassi at the 1999 French Open.

Gauff had a fantastic 2023 season, performing especially well in the year’s second half. The American won her first WTA 1000 championship in the Cincinnati Open after teaming up with Gilbert at the Citi Open, where she also won her first WTA 500 title.

The American won her maiden Grand Slam title by defeating Sabalenka 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 after dropping the opening set of the final.

Gilbert compared Gauff’s US Open victory to Andre Agassi’s 1999 French Open victory in a recent interview. He claimed that Gauff had to overcome multiple difficult matches in order to win, much like Agassi did.

Gilbert expressed his thoughts about Gauff in a recent interview and said: “She (Coco Gauff) had to figure her way out of four different matches. As I look back on it, it so reminds me of a tournament that was really special, the ’99 French. Andre (Agassi) had to wrangle his way through five difficult matches.”

Gilbert went on to say that Gauff’s development as a player has been greatly aided by her ability to adapt and solve problems throughout her tenure at the New York Major, particularly when overcoming a set or breakdown.

He added: “Coco, three different times she found herself a set down, once down a break in the third. So, she had to problem-solve. And those are the best kind of wins, where you grow the most, winning those types of matches.”
