To beat Novak Djokovic… you really have to beat him. This is the lesson learnt by Ernests Gulbis that as per Nole’s words he was the better player for most of their match in Montreal.
After winning the opener 7-5, Ernests had 2 consecutive match points when he was 6-4 up in the 2nd set tie-break to play very poorly (ie. too defensive) both MPs. After losing the tie-break Gulbis went on a sort of mental vacation to crash out in the decider without giving too much (additional) stress to the world no.1 The final score was 5-7 7-6 (7) 6-1. Djokovic: he was a better player for 2 sets
Nole commented “Ernests was a better player for two sets — unfortunately he missed two match points. I wasn’t very happy with my game. But you have to muscle it out sometimes and I had to put in the effort.
One day you play well, the other you don’t. It’s important to stay committed to every point, believe, fight. That’s what gets you out of trouble.”
The semis vs. Chardy
Nole will play Chardy in the semifinal. Head to head is 9-0 for Nole that has never conceded a single set to the Frenchman.
