Bianca Andreescu has given an update on her anticipated return date from a back injury in addition to formally ruling herself out of the Australian Open in 2024.

Since losing to Camila Giorgi in the first round of the Canadian Open, Andreescu has been sidelined by her injury since August 2023. The former US Open champion was unable to participate in the year’s final Grand Slam and will likely be absent for some time.

The 23-year-old gave a rough estimate of when she would recover while speaking at the Canadian Olympic Committee’s media summit in Paris. At present, the Canadian athlete is optimistic about returning to full fitness in the spring of 2024 and maybe playing in the Sunshine Double.

She recently talked in an interview and said: “No, sadly, I won’t be at the Australian Open. Right now, I’m looking at returning after the Australia Open or the American Tour, so Indian Wells. Right now, I’m still dealing with my back injury. It is getting better every single day. I’m doing everything I can to get there as fast as possible, but sadly, these things take some time. My frustration level has been very high. It’s the bone, right? So it takes a lot of time.”

Andreescu was also absent from the Billie Jean King Cup 2023, which Canada won for the first time after defeating Italy in the final match of the tournament. While Andreescu felt disappointed about missing out on the success, she was upbeat about her prospects of representing Canada in the 2024 Olympics. However, she also knows that to pass, she will need to make up lost ground.

She added: “I do miss playing and seeing the girls win the Billie Jean Cup too. I wish I was there. Injuries just stink. I’m super sad I couldn’t be there because it is also my dream to win that tournament. I have to dig deep next year to get my spot but I’ve always wanted to play in that tournament so I am hoping that will be enough motivation to win as much as I can. I’m feeling very confident for 2024.”
