Nick Kyrgios admits that he did not like tennis as a child and that he has severe imposter syndrome. Kyrgios’s mother signed him up for tennis lessons because he had been overweight as a child. The only reason it was done at the time was to motivate Kyrgios to get back into action.

In a recent interview, Kyrgios opened up about his dislike for tennis and said: “Well, I hated tennis when I was young. So, you know, I was very chubby and overweight as a kid. And my mom was kind of like, Okay, we’ve got to get you doing some sport or being active. So she dragged me down to the local tennis courts. And I remember I was crying all day; I hated it.”

Kyrgios wasn’t particularly fond of tennis at first, but he was performing admirably on the court. Then, Kyrgios overheard his coach remark that he was becoming proficient with it quite rapidly. That was a pivotal moment, according to Kyrgios, because his parents dedicated their entire being to supporting their son’s tennis career after that.

The 28-year-old Kyrgios has had a successful career and is now regarded as one of the most interesting and popular players in the game.

He added: “I never took myself seriously enough to one day be on the tour, beating people like Djokovic, Nadal, and Federer. It was just never on my mind. And then, all of a sudden, it just happened. And my life changed. It’s like, I have big imposter syndrome. Like I’m sitting here. I watch you in my bed at my house in Canberra. I’m watching you. And then, all of a sudden, I’m here having a conversation. Like, that’s just, for me, it’s crazy.”
