In tennis, the issue of the consequences of racket abuse has frequently taken center stage. When big stars are the focus of the show, the conversation gets heated. Kyrgios is a great guy to talk to about the topic because he frequently smashes his rackets.
Following his break in January of this year due to injury, Kyrgios’ supporters have been waiting for official word on a comeback. A staff member of Tennis Channel questioned him in a recent episode regarding the appropriate penalty for racket abuse. A compilation of Kyrgios smashing rackets was played next to him as his response to the question.
He expressed his thoughts about his issue and said: “I think there’s got to be levels to it. What you see on the screen there, some are not great. I think code violation and fine, however much the tournament was to fine me. I think there has to be a penalty for it. Now, I understand how many people are watching, and I am a role model to youth. So I never condoned the behavior.”
He added that even though he smashes the racket out of frustration, there ought to be consequences. Kyrgios added: “At the time, I’m just frustrated. But there definitely should be a penalty. I don’t know. The tour has fines for that. I have paid them all, by the way; I’ve never not paid any fine, I give them back. I think last year I only broke one tennis racket. It’s not too bad.”
