Alexander Zverev defeated Carlos Alcaraz in his first-ever ATP Finals match in Turin. After missing the tournament due to injury the previous year, Alcaraz’s poor play in the latter part of the season continued as he lost his opening round-robin match 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-4.

In an attempt to maintain his hopes of making the ATP Finals, Carlos Alcaraz will be starting over on Wednesday. After losing badly to Alexander Zverev in his opening match in Turin, Alcaraz’s chances of making it to the semi-finals now depend on him facing a player he has never faced before.

Now, in a match that both players must win to advance to the ATP Finals, Andrey Rublev and Alcaraz will face off against each other on the court for the first time in their careers.

Alcaraz congratulated Zverev on his victory and posted on his Instagram account: “Congratulations to @alexzverev123 for the win! This tournament is different in many ways, and one of them is that it allows you to reach the semis despite losing the first match! We will give our all on Wednesday.”

With the round-robin format as a means of achieving success, Alcaraz opened by optimistically discussing his chances of qualifying. He said: “It’s the only tournament where a loss does not knock you out. I still have a chance to continue improving and to get through the group stage. Tomorrow I’ll practice improving everything that I didn’t do well against Zverev, which is a lot.”

He further added: “Even though the court is swift, I need to be more consistent. At the end of the second set and the start of the third, I hit three or four shots out straight away. That can’t happen, although everyone has their own style. I watch Novak, for example, and he doesn’t give anything away immediately. My consistency was really lacking against Zverev.”

Given that two victories will be required to advance to the semifinals, Alcaraz continued by implying he is up to the challenge of taking on Rublev and Medvedev.
