When Novak Djokovic defeated Holger Rune in his opening match at the Nitto ATP Finals on Sunday, he secured his record-breaking ninth ATP Year-End No. 1 presented by Pepperstone finish.
Djokovic has won the title after a back-and-forth competition with Carlos Alcaraz during the 2023 campaign. The Serbian also maintained his record as the oldest year-end number one in the history of the Pepperstone ATP Rankings. He was the oldest player to finish the season in first place two years ago at the age of 34, and now, at 36, he has surpassed his own record.
Djokovic has now finished two years ahead of Pete Sampras, who is ranked second on the all-time list with six consecutive year-end No. 1 campaigns. In eight of the previous 13 seasons, the Serbian has been deserving of the honor.
Beginning on November 20, Djokovic will enjoy his record 400th week at the top of the Pepperstone ATP Rankings after securing the position of year-end No. 1. In 2023, Djokovic has held the top spot for 25 weeks. The Serbian and Alcaraz traded the top spot in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings seven times this year.
