Novak Djokovic on The ATP Finals: “Every match is going to be like finals”

Novak Djokovic is well aware of the records he still pursues and breaks as he approaches the Nitto ATP Finals at the conclusion of yet another amazing season.

Novak Djokovic Holds The Amazing Trophy

Novak Djokovic hopes to set yet another record as he heads into the Nitto ATP Finals at the end of another incredible season.

This season, the Serbian won three Grand Slams. At the Australian Open, he tied Rafael Nadal’s record of 22 men’s major singles titles. Later, he broke that record with victories at Roland Garros and the US Open. By taking home his 39th and 40th ATP Masters 1000 titles in Cincinnati and Paris, he additionally improved his own record there.

If he can maintain his top spot in Turin, he will add to two more incomparable records: becoming the year-end No. 1 for the eighth time and reaching 400 weeks at No. 1 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings.

However, there are other things that the Serbian is risking in the season finale. Djokovic will win his seventh Nitto ATP Finals title and break a tie with Roger Federer for the most at the highly valued year-end tournament if he can repeat as champion.

Djokovic is well aware of the records he still aims to achieve. He acknowledges the past but doesn’t lose sight of the here and now.

Djokovic expressed his thoughts at the Rolex Paris Masters and said: “I try to be a good student of the game and keep track of the numbers, but at the same time, I also want to be able to direct my attention to the next challenge. As long as I’m an active player, I guess that’s going to be the mentality I will nurture.”

He explained the importance of the Nitto ATP Finals and said: “Every match is going to be like the finals of a big tournament because you play a top-eight player. Every match carries a lot of ATP points and carries a lot of importance. It’s a group-stage format, which we don’t get to experience in any other tournament, so even if you lose a match or even two, in a round-robin system, you can still go through the semis.”

He concluded his discussion: “I had the perfect score in Torino last year—five wins out of five matches. I like playing there. I think I connect well with the Italian crowd. I’m going there with good feelings and a lot of confidence. I haven’t lost a match since the Wimbledon final, so I’m really excited to hopefully finish off the season on a high.”
