After considering retirement during his horrible injury run, Nick Kyrgios has disclosed that his motivation for making a comeback in tennis is to win a Grand Slam singles title.
The Australian tennis player identified Wimbledon as the competition he is most excited to win and called the grass-court Major the ultimate tennis experience. At the 2022 Wimbledon tournament, Kyrgios finished second, and seven-time winner Novak Djokovic beat him in the championship match.
After an outstanding 2022 season, Kyrgios has missed his competitive game due to injury this year. After undergoing knee surgery in January, the Australian has experienced additional setbacks and a wrist injury that have complicated his plans to make a comeback during the grass-court season.
In an interview, Kyrgios acknowledged that he has considered retiring, but he also explained why he is passionate about playing again.
He said: “When you’re winning, everything’s brighter. It’s good money, and the crowd loves it. I think my type of tennis is something that brings a lot of people together, gets people to have a couple of drinks and enjoy it, and gives them the entertainment that they want. I want to just be able to say I won one Grand Slam singles before I retire. I think that’s really driving me. I was so close; I was two sets away. I guess that’s what’s driving me.”
Kyrgios explained: “Wimbledon’s the biggest tournament in the world. I think tennis fans who don’t know tennis know what Wimbledon is. It’s just got that prestige. It’s like the pinnacle of tennis to me. If you win Wimbledon, no one can say anything to you. That would be the one that has a little asterisk on it and that’s the one I will put all my focus and diligence into. That’s the one I want to win and I was really close and I said I’ve still got that taste in my mouth of unfinished business. So I’m going to try my best to get back there.”
