Nadal back with weird win in Hamburg

Rafael Nadal has a strange comeback on clay.

The world no.10 decided to give it a shot at the ATP500 in Hamburg after 7 years, but the opener wasn’t that easy.

Rafa had to face his friend and clay court specialist Fernando Verdasco to immediately lose the first set 6-3. At that point with Verdasco on fire and Rafa not at his very best it seemed as the Mallorcan had to face another nasty upset. Instead Rafa bounced backin style to win the 2nd and 3rd set without much struggle. The final result was 3-6 6-1 6-1. Match Stats.

Nadal: Happy to have finished well the match

Rafa commented “For my mentality, it is important to finish the match better than how I started. To be able to make that change during the match was a very positive thing to me.”

Rafa will play either Vesely or Haider-Maurer in the second round.
