Former world number one and Polish tennis sensation, Iga Swiatek, has raised questions about the level of influence players have in shaping the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA). In a recent interview, Swiatek discussed potential reforms to strengthen the women’s tour and offered her perspective on a merger between the WTA and the men’s ATP tour.

When asked about the possibility of a merger between the WTA and ATP, Swiatek viewed it primarily as a business matter. She believed that, before considering such a significant change, the WTA should focus on enhancing its marketing and representation within the sport.

Swiatek, at just 21 years old, expressed reservations about the extent of players’ involvement in shaping the WTA’s direction. She noted,

“It’s supposed to be an organization of players, and we don’t have much to say.”

Her comments suggest a perceived disconnect between the tour’s governance and the active competitors.

In response to the merger question, Swiatek emphasized the need for a detailed analysis, taking into account factors such as sponsors and numbers. While recognizing the challenges of an extended season that often begins in mid-December, she maintained that this should not deter efforts to promote and strengthen the WTA brand.

“I think we should think about what to do to be stronger as a WTA federation, to be better marketed. I think there is room for improvement,”

Swiatek concluded, highlighting the importance of enhancing the WTA’s presence in the world of tennis.

As one of the sport’s emerging stars, Iga Swiatek’s insights shed light on the complex dynamics within the WTA and the ongoing discussions about its future direction.
