Jannik Sinner won the Vienna Open with a 7-6(7), 4-6, 6-3 victory on Sunday, extending a run of consecutive victories over Daniil Medvedev.
With top seed and reigning champion Medvedev hoping to exact revenge on Sinner for stealing the win from him at the China Open final at the beginning of October, it was an epic match between the tournament favorites.
Before this championship match, Sinner created history by becoming the first Italian male in the Open era to win an amazing 55 matches in a single season. With both players working hard to deny each other points, the match was deserving of a championship final. Medvedev got the early advantage, breaking to win the fourth game and dragging the 22-year-old around the court with his potent forehand.
After three hours and five minutes, Sinner held serve to complete the victory on his second match point.
Sinner expressed his remarks after the win and said: “It took a lot of mental and physical stuff. I think we both served very well in the first set. I somehow managed to get back on serve when there was a breakup because I felt like he was serving really well. I found a way in the first set.”
He added: “Second set, I felt like he was trying to get into the rally a little bit more, and I was hustling a little bit. In the third set, I tried to step up a little bit. I had a lot of breakpoints, and I couldn’t use them, but in the end, I used them, so I’m very happy. Obviously, to finish the match, it was really a mental thing, but I’m very happy about how I managed today and very happy for another title.”
Jannik Sinner after beating Daniil Medvedev to win his 10th ATP title:
“It took a lot of mental & physical strength. To finish the match, it was a really mental thing. For sure in the top 3 or top 5 matches I’ve played in my life. Playing finals is always special. Especially… pic.twitter.com/iRjUXfXnp3
