VIDEO. How Daniel Evans got injured in his match against Frances Tiafoe

Dan Evans had to leave his Erste Bank Open match against Frances Tiafoe due to a serious-looking calf injury. He left the court four weeks prior to the Davis Cup Finals.

Daniel Evans Injured

A serious-looking calf injury forced Dan Evans to retire from his Erste Bank Open match against Frances Tiafoe, and four weeks before the Davis Cup Finals, he walked off the court.

Pulling up hard at the baseline, the British player was leading 4-1 in the opening set. It was soon apparent that Evans would not be able to continue, as he looked hopeless while undergoing treatment.

Evans was included in Britain’s squad for the Davis Cup Finals the following month on Monday. Evans will be hoping that his injury is not severe enough to prevent him from competing in the men’s team event. Evans played a key role in helping his country advance to the knockout stage.

When he appeared to rupture his right calf muscle while trying to charge forward from the baseline in Vienna against American Tiafoe, Evans was in complete control. He had dominated the serve, and his clean return had caught the out-of-sorts Tiafoe off guard. He took one of four break points before attempting to close out the opening set.

However, Evans cried out in pain early in the sixth game as he turned around in shock and suffering. Evans gestured for help right away, getting over to his chair, clearly frustrated by the severity of his wound.

He seemed to inform the physiotherapist that he was unable to walk, and it became clear to him quickly that he would not be able to go on.
