Greek tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas has offered insight into the challenges he faces in his quest for Grand Slam titles, suggesting that he uses “way too much energy” on the court and that players like Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal are more adept at managing the physical and mental demands of major tournaments.
Tsitsipas, currently ranked world No. 7, has come close to clinching a Grand Slam victory, making it to two finals in his career. In both the 2021 French Open and the 2023 Australian Open, he faced Novak Djokovic but was unable to secure a victory. Notably, he led by two sets to love in the French Open final, only to see Djokovic mount a remarkable comeback.
The 25-year-old’s most significant title to date came at the 2019 ATP Finals in London, where he triumphed in a final set tiebreak against Dominic Thiem. Tsitsipas has also secured two ATP Masters 1000 titles at the Monte Carlo Masters in 2021 and 2022.
Speaking ahead of his participation in the ATP 250 event in Antwerp, Tsitsipas discussed the challenges of winning a Grand Slam. He acknowledged that he had come close to the elusive victory but suggested that he might have lacked the necessary energy management. He highlighted the ability of tennis legends like Djokovic, Federer, and Nadal in efficiently handling the rigorous physical and mental demands of major tournaments.
Tsitsipas admitted to a recent dip in form, having lost six of his last ten matches. He explained that he had attempted to rely more on his talent and less on discipline, which didn’t yield the expected results. However, he remains determined to turn things around and is eager to perform well in the last indoor tour of the season.
Stefanos Tsitsipas will begin his campaign at the ATP 250 event in Antwerp, facing Botic van de Zandschulp in his opening match. The Greek player’s reflections shed light on the intricate balance between talent, discipline, and energy management that is crucial for success at the highest level of professional tennis.
