Serena, Sharapova to clash in the Wimbledon semifinal

Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova will fight for a place in the Wimbledon final after battling in rough 3 setters.

Serena

The world no.1 had to recover a 1 set down against former world no.1 Vika Azarenka. After Serena won the match (3-6 6-2 6-3), the two players produced a great and refreshing hug at the net.

Talking about the big hug Serena commented “I’ve been really proud of her and her comeback.  I told her in Madrid, ‘Man, you’ve gone through a lot. I really support that. I really support you coming back.’ And we really get along off the court. She’s so sweet – we always text each other when we’re doing well.

She’s a really nice girl. I really admire her because she’s so intense on the court, but the second she comes off the court, she’s just so different. It’s really interesting to see. It’s super respectful.”

Great to see that.

Sharapova

Maria had also a rough ride against Coco Vandeweghe to win 6-3 6-7 (3) 6-2 after a 2 hours and 45 minutes battle.

Sharapova commented “I’ve played five matches already, I’ve faced different challenges, matches, opponents, circumstances – the first four matches I was playing quite well and got the job done in two sets. Today, serving for the second set, I could have made it easier. It went to a third, but I still got the job done. I have to be pleased with that, that I’m in the semifinals again here after so many years.”

Head to head

Serena leads Maria 17-2 and the Russian has able to win just 1 set in the last 12 matches. The American is the clear favorite, but Maria has chances to upset the seed no.1 on grass.

Game on!
