Federer edges Groth in tricky match

Roger Federer wins a tricky match against Samuel Groth in the 3rd round in Wimbledon.

The Maestro was widely superior to the Australian from the back of the court especially on his service games, but Groth was using his serve and volley really well even if Roger was able to read his powerful serve pretty well.

The world no.2 won the first 2 sets without many problems especially because he was practically perfect on his service games (he dropped just 5 points). So it was about breaking the Australian once per set and that was it.

The third set went straight to the tiebreak also because Groth tennis was improving dramatically especially at the net. A double fault from Roger in the middle of the tiebreak was enough to give the 3rd set to Samuel.

The 4th set was as smooth as silk for Roger that broke Samuel in the first and last game. The final result was 6-4 6-4 6-7 (5) 6-2. Mach Stats.

Federer: I had to change my returning

Roger commented “The only thing I really have to change is my returning. The rest, the service games, I can control them myself. Once the return is played, then it’s about reaction, especially when he’s serve‑volleying… I think that’s the biggest effort for me anyway, when I play a big server, understanding those patterns.”

Next vs. Bautista-Agut

Roger will play Roberto Bautista Agut in the 4h round. Head to head s 2-0 for Roger.
