Serena wins epic against Watson. Venus next!

That wasn’t easy!

Serena Williams had to face the Brit no.1 Heather Watson and she was 2 points away from losing the match.

Serena looked set to sail to the 4th round after leading 6-2 4-3. At that point Heather won 6 consecutive games to lead 2-6 6-3 3-0 (2 breaks up) and she had many opportunities to lead 4-0. Serena came back in force to break Heather and win 4 consecutive games (4-3).  Game over? Not really! Watson won the next 2 games (5-4), but she failed to serve out the match; eventually it was Serena to win the next 3 games and the match 6-2 4-6 7-5. Match Stats.

Serena: She played so well

The world no.1 commented “I’ve had some tough losses here, but that was probably my toughest match here, playing Heather in front of her home crowd. She played unbelievable. I think she should have won the match at this point. She was up two breaks – she really gave it her all.”

Watson: The atmosphere was amazing

Heather wasn’t happy for the outcome, but she conceded she had an amazing experience “I was two points away, so I’m pretty disappointed. But the atmosphere on that court was amazing. It really helped me and pushed me. I wish I could have closed it out at the end.

But it’s very positive that I put myself in this position. I could have been out in the first round in this tournament – I was match points down. I gave myself the opportunity to play against the best player in the world. I also gave myself the opportunity to beat her. I didn’t take it this time, but I’m really glad I was in that situation because I can definitely learn from it going forward, and do better next time.”

Next vs. Venus

Serena will play her sister Venus in the 4th round. Head to head is 14-11 for Serena, but Venus has won their last match.
