Simona Halep impressed in her opening match in Madrid after she defeated Margarita Gasparyan 6-0 6-4.
The Romanian looked to be in top form even if she struggled a bit at the very end of the match when the Russian was finding her way back in the contest. However, the world no.3 remained strong to win the encounter in straight sets.
Halep battling with a cold
Simona was pretty happy with her performance, and she revealed that she was elated with her preparation. However, she has some problem with a cold. After the match, Halep commented
“I play well every time I step on the center core because I like the court, I like the place and I like the tournament so I feel good here always.”
Talking about the fast conditions, Simona added
“It’s because of the altitude I like that. I think it’s an advantage for me. You get used after a few days and then you feel it normal”
About her preparation, the Romanian commented
“I think practiced very well but I am struggling a little bit with the health as I am sick with a cold, but you know, day by day we have to see how it goes.”
Simona will face the world no.47 Jo Konta in the 2nd round. The head to head is 3-all.
