The timeline of Veronika Kudermetova’s association with the Moscow-based Russian Army sports club CSKA is under debate. While she trained at the club during her junior years and lived nearby, reports vary on when her affiliation ended.
Although some sources suggest that Kudermetova was still linked to the club in 2022, the tennis player herself clarified that she currently lacks any contract or membership with CSKA. She asserted, “I don’t have a contract with them, I don’t have a salary from them – for the moment we are separate.”
Kudermetova’s statements came in response to queries arising from requests to ban athletes associated with CSKA from professional sports. She recently won the Toray Pan Pacific Open title in Tokyo, defeating Jessica Pegula. Reflecting on her victory, Kudermetova praised her opponent and expressed her determination to fight for success.
The Tokyo title marks Kudermetova’s second career win in a WTA 500 event, with her previous victory occurring in Charleston in 2021. Despite a challenging period with limited victories leading up to Tokyo, her quarterfinal triumph over World No. 2 Iga Swiatek signaled a turning point in her recent form.
Kudermetova’s powerful groundstrokes and impressive returns were key factors in her success, helping her secure a 3-0 start to the final match and ultimately win the title. Her victory has boosted her motivation for future competitions as she aims to build on her recent triumphs.
