Tsitsipas books a final in Estoril after a tough fight with Goffin

Tsitsipas wins in 3 sets to reach Estoril finals

Stefanos Tsitsipas

Stefanos Tsitsipas had to play some tough tennis and show his best fighting spirit in a see-saw match against David Goffin in the semifinals of the Estoril Open. Tsitsipas won the match 3-6 6-4 6-4. The Greek will now try to win his 3rd ATP Tour title on Sunday when he will face Pablo Cuevas.

The Match

Goffin was in full control of the first set in which he broke Tsisipas service twice to win the set 6-3. The second set of the match was a tough battle between the two players. 7 of the 10 breaks of the match came in the 2nd set when both players looked unable to hold their serve. In most part, Goffin looked the better of the two to walk away with the match but Tsitsipas fought hard and broke Belgian’s serve 5 times in the 2nd and the 3rd set to emerge as the winner.

Goffin fell just short in the end. In the 3rd set, Tsitsipas broke in the second last game of the match and held his serve to win the set, match and a spot in the finals after a 2 hours and 18 minutes battle.

Why Tsitsipas was so happy

After the match, Stefanos commented

“I fought very hard and gave my soul out on the court, which is the biggest pleasure in this sport. Clay is one of my favourite surfaces. It would be lovely to have a title on this surface. Estoril is just an amazing place, so it would mean even more owning something here.”
