In his debut encounter in China, Holger Rune defeated Felix Auger Aliassime 6-4 6-4 in the ATP 500 in Beijing. Rune wasn’t having a good time because he hadn’t competed since late August at the US Open and hadn’t earned a tour-level victory since Wimbledon when he arrived in Asia.
The 20-year-old made a valiant effort at the Olympic Green Tennis Center in Beijing, eliminating the Canadian despite recently struggling with physical issues.
Rune discussed this recently in an interview and said: “It was a good feeling. I had a difficult time, both physically and with the circumstances of the matches, so I’m happy to be back to feeling good. I feel mentally good on and off the court. I’m very happy with my level today.”
Additionally, Rune was unable to attend the Laver Cup due to a back injury when his team Europe side suffered a humiliating defeat to the World squad. He said: “I felt very good. I didn’t feel anything in my body. That’s good. I don’t mind muscle soreness, but I’m too young to have these kinds of problems, so it’s nice to feel good on the court. I feel healthy, I take care of my body and I’m very happy to play without pain and have fun.”
