Coco Gauff returns to tennis after US Open victory, embraces Chinese culture

Coco Gauff, the 19-year-old tennis champion, has taken a one-week hiatus from the sport after winning her first Grand Slam title at the US Open. She is now set to compete in the prestigious Zhengzhou Open, a WTA 500 tournament in China. Gauff arrived in China on September 27 and expressed excitement for the tournament, embracing Chinese culture through traditional tea tasting ceremonies and playing the Guzheng. She is eager to return to training and work.

Coco Gauff, who recently secured her first Grand Slam title at the US Open, took a brief one-week hiatus from tennis. Now, the 19-year-old champion is ready to get back to work, and she’s chosen the Zhengzhou Open, a prestigious WTA 500 tournament in China, as her next battleground. Currently ranked as the world number 3, Gauff is set to face a strong lineup in Zhengzhou, including Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova, Elena Rybakina, Ons Jabeur, and Maria Sakkari.

Gauff arrived at Beijing Capital International Airport on Wednesday, September 27 for her WTA tournament in Beijing and her welcome was nothing short of warm and inviting. Greeted with a bouquet of flowers and smiles, she expressed her excitement for the upcoming tournament, stating, “It’s been a huge summer for me, and I’m excited to build on my US Open win and put in a really big finish to what’s been an amazing year.” Gauff also shared her enthusiasm for playing in front of Chinese fans.

During her stay, Gauff embraced Chinese culture by participating in a traditional tea tasting ceremony and trying her hand at playing the Guzheng, also known as the Chinese Zither. She even ventured into the art of Chinese calligraphy, proudly displaying her newfound skills.

Reflecting on her US Open victory, Gauff mentioned her one-week break from tennis, the longest she’s ever taken, and how eager she was to get back to training and work.
