Stan Wawrinka takes a dig on the Davis Cup management over format of the tournament with Djokovic by his side

Stan Wawrinka thinks the current Davis Cup system is ineffective and wants it to be changed in the future for the betterment of tennis.

Stan Wawrinka With Novak Djokovic

Stan Wawrinka believes that the present Davis Cup structure is a failure and would want to see it changed in the future.

Wawrinka recently made headlines when he publicly criticized the Davis Cup management for scheduling Switzerland to play in Manchester in front of an empty stadium. That is, of course, a result of the new format, in which only a few teams compete in front of spectators.

Even Novak Djokovic discussed the format and acknowledged that players weren’t contacted, which in his opinion should have been the case. Wawrinka expressed his complete agreement and noted that not only has the competition’s new format been a disaster, but more significantly, those responsible for its creation continue to have a say in how the event will be run in the future.

He expressed his thoughts in an interview and said: “As we said, they took the decision five years ago to bring a new company in to change the format. You have to try new things, that’s for sure. But it’s been quite a clear disaster. I saw this company finished the deal of 25 years, they finish after five years?”

He further added: “So that means something is wrong, something is not working. The people who made the decision to make this new format are still deciding on the future of the Davis Cup. So there is, of course, something wrong. And I also read what Novak said. It’s completely right. They didn’t ask players what they think. We shouldn’t be deciding but we should give advice on what we believe can be good for the sports, for the fans, and for the players.”
