Roger Federer is about to come back on clay from next week in Madrid. Jim Courier explains why.

Federer and Courier

Roger Federer is finally coming back to play the clay court season, and he will compete next week in Madrid.

The Swiss sensation announced his return to the dirt early this year, and the choice of Madrid is because the altitude makes the balls travel faster in the air to help Roger’s game.

Why Federer is back on clay

During a recent interview with The Age, the 4-time slam champion Jim Courier explained the 3 reasons why Roger decided to get back and compete on the dirt to say:

“Only Roger knows for sure why he is adding clay back to his schedule but I believe there are a few good reasons.

One, he must feel confident enough in his back to play on clay again. His fitness coach (Paganini) has said that clay is the surface that caused his back the most trouble in recent years so they were avoiding it to protect his body.

Two, he missed playing at Roland Garros.

Three, by playing a few clay events he will be sharper at the start of the grass court season.”

Federer back in Madrid and Paris

Roger will kick start his campaign in Madrid where he has won the title 3 times (2006, 2009, and 2012). Later in the month, he will start his run at the French Open for the 2nd time in his career after 2009.
