Finally, Roger Federer will be back on clay next week in Madrid after 3 years.

The world no.4, missed the clay court season in 2017 as he was struggling with his fitness, while in 2018 he decided to just focus on the grass season.

Federer in 2019

Roger is having a smashing 2019. The Swiss was in supreme form at the Australian Open, but he was surprised by an even better player (Stefanos Tsitsipas) in the 4th round. However, the Swiss Maestro managed to win his title no.100 later in Dubai, and he was the superstar at the Sunshine Double after he reached the final in Indian Wells and he won Miami.

As expected, Roger skipped Monte Carlo that is a tournament that he is never very keen on playing while he announced his participation to the ATP1000 in Madrid and at the French Open. For the time being, Federer is not expected to compete in Rome, but that could also be an opportunity (see article)

Federer and Madrid

Roger won a title in Madrid on 3 occasions (2006, 2009, 2012). The 20-slam champion loves to play in the Spanish capital since the altitude (660mts) makes the balls flying faster in the air and that works like a charm for Federer.

4 reasons why Federer can win Madrid

Roger has concrete chances to win the Mutua Madrid Open not only because of the conditions (1st reason), but also because the top3 players in the world (Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Sascha Zverev) are not at their very best (2nd reason).

In addition, Roger is in fantastic form this year (3rd reason), and he had a lot of time to prepare this event (4th reason).

Even if Federer confessed that is not completely confident about playing on clay, he will be definitely among the top favorite to win Madrid.
