With the recent rise of Holger Rune, Jannik Sinner, and Carlos Alcaraz, Roger Federer discussed the young generation of players gaining the spotlight.
In a recent interview, Federer highlighted the current tennis landscape on both the men’s and women’s sides. Federer is now in Vancouver, Canada for his own event, the Laver Cup.
On the men’s side, he emphasized the significant Grand Slam runs of the top three players in the world: Daniil Medvedev, who defeated Carlos Alcaraz to advance to his third US Open final, and Novak Djokovic, who won the Australian Open, the French Open, and his 24th Slam at the US Open. Carlos Alcaraz defeated the Serb to win Wimbledon.
Federer stated his remarks on top players and said: “On the men’s side, we have some great, great moments with Novak rewriting history, Alcaraz winning Wimbledon. I mean, I think, Medvedev played fantastic as well in New York.”
The debate regarding the next generation of stars has intensified due to the success of stars like Alcaraz, Holger Rune, and Jannik Sinner. Federer acknowledged the disappointment at not having faced any of the three young players in a single match.
Federer expressed his thoughts about the young performers and said: “Young guys coming through as well. A generation that I didn’t play very – at all, actually. Rune, Sinner, and Alcaraz, unfortunately, I missed them, you know, playing against them.”

Carlos Alcaraz in 2023
Currently ranked no.2, Alcaraz played his last match on the 8th of September when he surrendered to world no.3 Daniil Medvedev 7-6(3) 6-1 3-6 6-3 in the semifinal of the U.S. Open (draw).
This year the Spaniard achieved a compiled 58-7 match record. The Spaniard clinched 6 titles in 2023 in Buenos Aires, Indian Wells, Barcelona, Madrid, London and Wimbledon. The Spaniard was the finalist in Rio de Janeiro and Cincinnati.
Alcaraz is scheduled to compete next in Beijing (China Open). He will start the tournament from the main draw that will commence on the 28th of September.
Jannik Sinner in 2023
Ranked no.7, Sinner played his last match on the 4th of September when he was defeated by world no.10 Alexander Zverev 6-4 3-6 6-2 4-6 6-3 in the 4th round of the U.S. Open (draw).
Presently, during this year Sinner has managed to achieve a composed 44-13 win-loss record. The Italian has won 2 titles in 2023 in Montpellier and Toronto. Jannik was the finalist in Rotterdam and Miami.
Sinner has scheduled to play next in Beijing (China Open). He will start from the main draw that will commence on the 28th of September.
Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner fought against each other 7 times. The head to head is 4-3 for Alcaraz. The last time they played each other, Jannik Sinner won 6-7(4) 6-4 6-2 in the semifinal in Miami (Miami Open) on the 31st of March 2023.

Holger Rune in 2023
Now ranked no.4 (career-high), the Dane played his last match on the 15th of September when he was defeated by world no.117 Thiago Moura Monteiro 6-7(4) 7-6(5) 6-2 in the Rubber 1 of the Davis Cup (draw).
This year Rune has a 37-17 win-loss record. This year, Holger lifted the trophy in Munich. Rune was the runner-up in Monte-Carlo and in Rome.
