Serena Williams once stated that she used to think of tennis as an individual sport. However, she has since matured and has begun to think about it as a team sport because it requires her to perform on the court as well as off the court as a chief executive of a larger enterprise with different moving parts.
Williams is bringing those CEO skills that she has learned and honed on the court to her career in the business world that encompasses fashion, tech as well as venture capitalism.
Serena Williams says she wants to know what she is doing wrong
Williams acknowledges that she was never the team leader growing up, being the youngest of five children. She always did what everyone expected of her. Her father wanted her to play tennis which is why she pursued tennis, while also following her sister Venus’s path.
This made Williams critical when it comes to overcoming her faults. “I tell my coach and my fashion team, don’t tell me what I’m doing right,” Williams said. “I want to hear what I’m doing wrong so I can improve and become better…It is important and it is nothing that is negative. That is why the word ‘constructive criticism’ is super important. It is just how you take it. If you take it negatively, you know you will never have positive results.”
Williams is all set to take on the business world as many successful CEOs share the same sentiment that she has shared.
