Great news from the Flushing Meadows as the last piece of steel of the new retractable roof has been put in place on the Arthur Ashes Stadium

The organization confirms that the retractable roof will be fully operational for the 2016 US Open.  The construction of the roof implied the use of 5,000tons of steel, 1,700 structural beams, 24 exterior columns and 115,500 bolts.

The tournament is still outdoor

According to Danny Zausner, Chief Operating Officer of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center the tournament, the event will not change its characteristics “The important thing for us was to still be an outdoor tournament, and except when it rains, that roof will be open and people will still feel they are outdoors. You can still go to the upper promenade and still see sweeping views of Manhattan, which we felt was very important to the process.”

Complete renewal of the Centre

Gordon Smith, USTA Chief Operating Officer, commented “We are completely reimagining the Tennis Center, We want nothing less than this facility being the finest tennis venue in the world and the preeminent sports facility in New York City.”
