Clay courts and Nick Kyrgios have historically not gone very well together. This coupled with his fondness of grass courts has created quite a bit of controversy. This controversy was pushed into the limelight when a short clip made the rounds on the Internet which shows Nick Kyrgios preparing for the 2019 clay court session.
The video has given a startling insight into Nick Kyrgios’s distaste for clay courts with him being heard saying, “Can’t believe I’m hitting on this surface.” He continued by saying, “Shouldn’t even be a surface,” and “Stop the whole clay court season, make it grass”.
Nick Kyrgios has always been verbal about his preference for grass courts
Kyrgios hasn’t been quiet about his distaste for clay courts. Speaking to the Times last year, Kyrgios praised grass courts while giving clay courts a bit of a verbal beatdown. In the interview, he said, “People say tennis now doesn’t belong on the grass, but that’s not true. It is pure tennis at its finest. You have to be talented to play on grass. If you have a good serve and a good return, you get rewarded. If you come forward you benefit, but if you do that on any other surface, you get punished.”
These comments serve to highlight Nick Kyrgios’s style of play. Anyone who has seen him play would comment on his booming serve as well as his feisty forehands which are taken to another level on grass. Nick Kyrgios announced himself to the world when he defeated Rafael Nadal in the 4th round during Wimbledon 2014.
