Andy Murray said in his post-match interview that it was his grandmother’s funeral that day and he was unable to attend it to be able to play in the competition. He then dedicated his Davis Cup match victory to her.
Murray started to speak before turning emotional and the audience started encouraging him. He said: “Today is a tough day for me. It’s my Gran’s funeral today. I’m sorry to my family that I’m not able to be there but Gran, that one is for you.”
Great Britain took a 1-0 lead over Switzerland following Andy Murray’s comeback win over Leandro Riedi in the first set. The doubles team of Dan Evans and Neal Skupsi then won their match to make the score 2-1 in favor of the British.
Murray further told the news: “I spoke to my dad about it and he said ‘she would want you to play’. He said ‘Make sure you win’ – so I did.”

Now the world no.41, Murray played his last match on the 15th of September when he defeated world no.154 Leandro Riedi 6-7(7) 6-4 6-4 in the Rubber 1 of the Davis Cup (draw).
Presently, during this year the Brit owns a composed 29-13 win-loss record. Murray clinched 3 titles in 2023 in the Aix En Provence Challenger, the Surbiton Challenger and the Nottingham Challenger. Murray was the finalist in Doha.
He is also scheduled to play in Beijing (China Open). The main draw will start on the 28th of September.
