Following Holger Rune’s withdrawal from the Davis Cup with Denmark on Saturday, questions remain unanswered regarding his physical condition.
Rune withdrew in the fourth Davis Cup game against Brazil. Rune put up a valiant effort on the first day, but Thiago Monteiro defeated him with a score of 6-7(4) 7-6(5) 6-2 after nearly three hours of play.
The 20-year-old was supposed to compete once more on Saturday to support his nation in the series, but Elmer Miller finally took his place. His manager and mother, Aneke Rune, revealed in a written statement that he has a back problem.
Aneke explained: “That’s why he couldn’t finish the match yesterday. It hurts every time he pushes for the serve. And large doses of ibuprofen haven’t worked. So, he needs to have an injection in his back to address the inflammation that’s there now.”
She further added: ” It happened in Rome and worsened during the French Open because he swayed so much during his serve. The good news is that everyone says it won’t be detrimental to his career in the long run because it has developed from repeated incorrect movements. But that doesn’t change the fact that it’s unbearable for Holger.”
The Laver Cup is Rune’s next scheduled competition, although there are still no assurances that he will play. Rune is a member of Team Europe, which will compete against the rest of the world there the next weekend.
