ATP BARCELONA. Tsitsipas wins, Zverev badly upset

Stefanos Tsitsipas wins a good opening match in Spain while Alexander Zverev is badly upset.

Tsitsipas in Barcelona

Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alexander Zverev were the big names in action on Tuesday in Barcelona. Stefanos won in straight sets while Sascha was badly upset.

Tsitsipas vs. Fucsovic

Stefanos was the favorite against the world no.36 Marton Fucsovic. However, the Greek stumbled in the 3rd game after being broken (1-2). Then Tsitsipas bounced back to win 3 consecutive games (4-2 and 2 breaks), but once again he conceded his serve at love soon after (4-3). That was the last time that the Greek conceded his serve and eventually he won the opener 6-3 after breaking the Hungarian again in the 8th game.

Both players managed to stay on serve in the second set, until the Greek broke Fucsovic in the 9th game (5-4). That was enough for Stefanos to win the match 6-3 6-4 in 68 minutes.

Tsitsipas will face Jan-Lennard Struff for a place in the quarters. The head to head is 1-0 for Tsitsipas that defeated Struff in the 2nd round in Sofia this year 7-6 (5) 6-4.

Zverev vs. Jarry

Alexander lost yet another match, and this time he was upset by the lucky loser and world no.81 Nicolas Jarry. It seemed as Zverev was having an “ordinary win” when he was leading 6-3 5-4, then “disaster” did strike with the Chilean winning the next 6 games (!!!) and conquer a 3-6 7-5 3-0 lead.  When Zverev won the following 3 games (3-3) it seemed as he found the solution.

However, after another exchange of breaks, the pair went to the breaker that Nicolas won after he conquered 5 consecutive points reversing a 0-3 deficit in a 5-3 lead. The final result was 3-6 7-5 7-6 (5), and the contest ended after 2 hours and 33 minutes.

This is Zverev’s 4th loss in the last 6 matches, and he has a 2-3 win-loss record this year on clay.
