Wawrinka wins the French Open!

What a final!

Stan Wawrinka surprises everybody by upsetting Novak Djokovic in the French Open final. The Swiss played an incredible tennis taking advantage of his huge backhand to constantly put Djokovic on the back foot.

During this final we had 2 completely different guys on court. On one side the world no.1 was a bit too tense as he couldn’t miss the title this year especially after beating Nadal and an in-form Murray in the semi. On the other side Wawrinka had nothing to lose so as to play (almost) free from every pressure.

Wawrinka showed the right aggressive attitude from the very beginning, but eventually he lost the opener 6-4. So there was a sense that the Djoker had this one, but surprisingly enough the Serbian was broken in the last game of the 2nd set and the match went on a 1-set-all score-line.

In the third set Nole struggled in every service game to be broken at 0 in the 6th game (2-4) and that was enough for Stan to win the second set 6-3.

Things seemed to “normalize” in the 4th set when Novak got a fast 3-0 lead. At that point the match appeared to be bound to the 5th set, but eventually Wawrinka broke back in the 5th game (2-3) to then hold serve. At the end the 4th set the Swiss shot an incredible array of backhands to gain the decisive break in the 9th game (5-4) and then he won the match 4-6 6-4 6-3 6-4.

Wawrinka: I am still surprised how I played..

Stan commented “I had a good talk with Magnus before the final. I was feeling really relaxed until maybe 15 minutes before to go on the court. Then I started to be really nervous. I am still surprised the way I played, because I think I played amazing today. I was really nervous, but I didn’t really choke. I was always going for my shots, always going for the right play.”

… I was very nervous in the last game

The Stan shared some thoughts about the last game “I was really nervous that game, because I knew I was serving for the match. I was starting to think about the French Open winner, the trophy and everything. So I just tried to be focused. I saved a break point after that, and the thing is, I think I was doing the right thing. That’s the most important. That’s the only way I can give myself some chance to beat the top guys.”

Oh boys…. we really enjoyed that… thanks to both Stan and Nole!
