Serena: I thought about retiring from the final

Serena Williams doesn’t have doubts: this was the toughest slam she has won.

The American fell sick since the third round to have won a spectacular semifinal against Bacsinszki, but she was so sick soon after that she was really unsure about playing the final.

Serena: this was the most difficult slam…

The world no.1 commented “Is it the most difficult Grand Slam I’ve ever won? For sure. When you have the flu your whole body aches. That’s kind of what I have been dealing with.

Even now I just really don’t have any energy and I just want to go to bed.”

… I lived in a nightmare …

Then she added “It’s been a nightmare 48 hours. After that (semis) I was in the locker-room just laying down after the match. I don’t even think I made it to press because I was just so out of it. I barely made it home.

I took a hot shower. I went to bed and then I didn’t leave bed until like 4pm or 5pm yesterday. I was just thinking, ‘I have to go for a walk. This house is making me sick. I have to get out. I have to get some air.’ I went for a walk. I came back. I got worse.

I talked to all the doctors here and the physios here. I even told the physio, ‘I’m not sure I’m going to be able to play because this is just not looking good.’”

… last night it was really bad.

Then she concluded “I actually was really bad last night. And then they helped me out. I hit a little bit today in the morning and I hit them pretty well. I was just like, ‘Okay, I have been playing for over 30 years. I know I can at least play tennis.”‘

THAT WAS A STRUGGLE…
