Stan Wawrinka angry over the format of the team at the Davis Cup

At the Davis Cup, Wawrinka complained about the team's format, claiming that the competition's current structure was inefficient.

Stan Wawrinka Upset For Davis Cup

Stan Wawrinka expressed his displeasure with the team tennis competition’s structure during the Davis Cup. In the Davis Cup Finals group stage in 2023, Wawrinka will compete for Switzerland in three of its games.

The matches involving the host nation, Great Britain, have drawn significant crowds, and Sunday’s match against France is sold out, but the competition’s new format raises difficulties for the organizers because other nations will be playing at the same stadium.

It is challenging to sell tickets for games that do not involve the host country, despite the fact that Great Britain, Switzerland, France, and Australia make up an excellent group in Manchester and have some great players participating.

The Kosmos Group, founded by former Barcelona defender Gerard Pique, partnered with the International Tennis Federation to relaunch the World Cup of Team Tennis in August 2018, which resulted in changes to the Davis Cup’s format.

That put an end to the long-standing and incredibly popular home matches between individual nations, which led to some of tennis’ most dramatic moments in the past years.

The first game, which featured Switzerland vs. France in front of a barely filled Manchester venue, clearly indicated a lack of interest. The three-time Grand Slam winner Wawrinka was motivated by this to write a comment saying the competition’s present structure was ineffective.

Wawrinka posted on his official Twitter account with a video of the empty stands and said: “Thank you  @3gerardpique@ITFTennis!@DavisCup France vs Switzerland in Manchester lol.”
