On Saturday, September 9, Gauff defeated Sabalenka 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 to win her first Grand Slam trophy. After dropping the first set, she strengthened her defense and broke her opponent four times in the following two sets to cap off her American summer in style.

Coco Gauff talked to her boyfriend late into the night before her US Open final match against Aryna Sabalenka in an effort to avoid dwelling on the outcome. The 19-year-old made use of her previous French Open experience, having lost to Iga Swiatek in the final  6-3 6-1 last year. Gauff claimed that she spent too much time thinking about defeating the Pole before the Paris final, but she refrained from having the same emotions before the match on Saturday.

During the press conference that followed her final, she commented: “Honestly, I didn’t have any of those visions till last night. You know, I thought about it, but I told myself to get it out of my head, because that’s what I did at French. I was envisioning, you know, what would happen if I would win. I think I wanted it too much.”

She added: “Last night, I started a little bit, but honestly, I just called my boyfriend, and I told him let’s talk until it’s time to go to sleep so we spoke until 1:00 a.m

. and then I went to sleep.”
