For Daniil Medvedev, beating Carlos Alcaraz and reaching the U.S. Open final for a third time would require playing at an 11 out of 10 level on Friday. Alcaraz’s reign as Flushing Meadows champion was interrupted by the third-seeded Russian, who won a thrilling match under the closed roof of Arthur Ashe Stadium 7-6(3) 6-1 3-6 6-3. But, to win, the Russian needed to perform better than he had anticipated.
During the on-court interview, Medvedev explained that he had to play at his very best to say: “I said I needed to play 11 out of 10, I played 12 out of 10 – except the third set, that’s the only way. To beat him you need to be better than yourself and I managed to do it.”
