The 10th seed countryman Frances Tiafoe was defeated by Ben Shelton on Tuesday night at Flushing Meadows, making Shelton the youngest American to reach the US Open semifinals in thirty years. Shelton overcame a close call in the third-set tie-break.

Shelton talked in the on-court interview and said: “I felt like I left it all out here tonight. It was an emotional battle.”

Shelton had two set points at 6/4 when the set reached the tie-break, but soon after at 6/5, he served repeated double faults, giving Tiafoe his own set point. Shelton answered by launching a forehand return from his second serve down the line and into the far corner of the court for a clean victory. Two points later, he had won the set.

With his plenty of exhausting roars to his box, Shelton electrified the cheering crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
