Andrey Rublev discussed his friendship with his upcoming opponent Daniil Medvedev after his victory in the 2023 US Open’s fourth round. The world No. 8 Rublev defeated Jack Draper on Monday to reach the quarterfinals of the US Open for the fourth time in his career.

The Russian will now play fellow countryman Daniil Medvedev, who also qualified for his fourth appearance in the final eight in New York by beating Alex de Minaur. The two Russians will face off for the eighth time in their rivalry during the quarterfinal. Rublev has two victories to Medvedev’s five in their head-to-head matchups.

In his post-match press conference, Rublev stated that although the two first became close through tennis when they were kids, their relationship has now grown beyond the sport.

The 25-year-old took on the role of godfather for Alisa, Medvedev’s daughter, earlier this year. Then he called Medvedev ‘family’.

Rublev stated: “I think it’s something already like a family because I’m the godfather of his daughter. So, it’s become a bit. Obviously, we built our relationship because of tennis, but now it’s already bigger than tennis. We know each other, I don’t know, since we were six maybe or something. I don’t know.”
