Aryna Sabalenka described her first-ever journey to the top of the global rankings as "crazy and just unbelievable."

Sabalenka Earns Top Spot

Aryna Sabalenka called her first-ever rise to the top of the world’s rankings “crazy and just unbelievable.” On Monday, 25-year-old Sabalenka will formally succeed Iga Swiatek as the world’s top tennis player. Sabalenka revealed she would be replacing Swiatek as the number one player following the US Open after the latter’s shocking round-of-16 exit.

Sabalenka talked about Swiatek’s exit from the US Open and stated: “First of all, I mean honestly, I had no doubt that she’s gonna make it to the final. It was only depending on me if I would be able to make it to the final. And I really wanted to have this battle and decide everything on the court. But I was sad that she lost. It means a lot to me. All this year I’ve been pushing myself so hard to reach this goal, to become World No. 1.”

She further added: “It really means a lot for me, a lot for my family and… It’s just, it’s just unbelievable. It’s something crazy. I still can’t believe it. And I was really afraid that I would be distracted by this news today.”

Since January, Sabalenka has been chasing Swiatek, and now things are finally falling into place for the Belarussian.
